FORM A WRITERS GROUP

Getting together with other people who also like to write keeps writing alive!

This is how you can start your own writers group:

Contact other people who like to write, ask your friends, talk to your librarian, put and add at school.

When you have a list of people interested (between 3 to 8 is a good number of participants), choose a time, date, and place to meet. Ask your parents for permission before using the living room for the meetings! (Libraries are also a good place to meet.  Make sure to ask your librarian first).

Here are some helpful guidelines for a writers meeting, but you have to decide what would work best for your group:

Divide the time between the number of people participating in the meeting and give each writer the opportunity to use this time entirely to read, talk, and hear reactions about his work. Use a timer if necessary.

*
Each person reads his work, or some one else reads for him (This last option often allows the author to hear the mistakes!)

*
Talk about the work you just heard. Remember to give your reactions about the writing. Were you confused? Did it the writing make you feel sad, happy, worried, etc? Try to give at least two or three sincere compliments before giving your opinion about something you didn’t understand or didn’t think was the best part of the work.

*
Remember that it always help another writer to know the strengths as well as the weakness of his written work. Keep high standards of respect for each other at all times.

*
Two useful things to say after someone has critiqued your writing or made a suggestion are, “Let me think more about your suggestion,” and “thank you.”
